PSI’s work on low cost, size, weight , and power optically pumped alkali atom magnetometers is a enabling capability for a wide array of geophysical sensing and exploration programs. Full spectrum modeling and simulation tools enable high fidelity performance predictions and system optimization.

Magnetometers find applications in a wide range of Geophysical exploration and environmental sensing systems. PSI’s extensive background in optical sensor phenomenology, including optically pumped alkali atom magnetometers, creates opportunities to develop specialty magnetometers for demanding applications.

Over the past 5 years, PSI has been developing a low cost, size, weight, and power, optically pumped, alkali atom magnetometer for expendable environmental sensors. Ongoing efforts include electronics design and packaging efforts for small Unmanned Air Systems (sUAS) capabilities demonstration programs. In support of the magnetometer development programs, PSI has developed physics-based system level performance prediction tools that enable system level performance analysis under a wide range of background environments.
